How to Measure Your Dog or Cat for Clothes
Getting the right size is the easiest way to make sure your pet is comfortable in their outfit. A good fit should not pull, pinch or restrict movement. This guide shows you how to take three simple measurements at home.

What you need
- A soft tape measure (or a piece of string and a ruler)
- Treats, to keep your pet calm and happy
- A pen and paper to note the numbers
Step 1: Neck
Measure around the base of the neck, where a collar would normally sit. Keep the tape snug, but leave enough room to slide one finger underneath.
Step 2: Back length
Measure along the back, from the base of the neck (where the collar sits) to the base of the tail. Let your pet stand naturally, with the tape lying flat along the spine.
Step 3: Chest
Measure around the widest part of the chest, just behind the front legs. Again, the tape should be snug, with room for one finger.
Optional: Weight
Weight is a useful guide, but it doesn’t replace measuring. Two pets of the same weight can have very different shapes. Our size chart lists the weight range for each size, so you can use it as a second check.
Choosing the size
- Compare your three measurements with the size chart on the product page.
- If your pet falls between two sizes, choose the larger size for a relaxed fit, or the smaller size for a snug fit. Knit pieces have a little stretch, while woven fabrics have less.
- If your pet is very fluffy, measure over the coat, and choose the larger size if the fur is thick.
- Please note that sizes may vary by ±2 cm because every piece is measured by hand.
Tips for cats and wriggly pets
- Choose a calm moment, such as after a meal or a nap.
- Use a piece of string, mark the length with your fingers, then measure the string against a ruler.
- Ask a second person to hold a treat while you measure.
- If your pet won’t stay still, take the measurements one at a time and rest between each.
